As you know, last week, the explosive story about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s foreign fundraising operation was released by Think Progress.
The story involved the disclosure of fundraising documents U.S. Chamber staffers have distributed to solicit foreign (even state-owned) companies to donate directly to the Chamber’s 501(c)(6).
A chart was then published this week showing at least 80 foreign companies that gave money directly to the Chamber to fund its attack ads.
Even though the use of foreign funds is illegal in American political campaigns, Citizens United allows the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to hide where it gets its funding from.
We do know from the list of foreign firms that large foreign entities such as Avarasa Technologies, Dua Associates, and NIT Technologies in India as well as Gulf Petrochemical and Bahrain Petroleum in the Middle East have been leading donors to these Chamber of Commerce attack ads. Another foreign donor to the Chamber, Wipro, is located in Bangalore, India and brags that it is "India's biggest destination for U.S. offshoring." Nobody knows the full extent of the number of foreign donors to the Chamber since the organization refuses to disclose its list of donors.
